What is the 904L Stainless Steel Pipe/Tube?
904L stainless steel pipe (UNS N08904 / 1.4539) is a high-alloy, austenitic stainless steel developed for exceptional corrosion resistance in harsh environments. With high levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper, it resists sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, and offers excellent performance in chloride-rich conditions.
It is non-magnetic, easy to fabricate, and outperforms standard grades like 316L in acid-heavy, high-temperature, and high-humidity environments.
904L Corrosion Resistance
904L is resistant to attack by seawater and chlorine. The high performance of 904L against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of nickel in its composition. In addition, the addition of copper also acts as a resistor, blocking the corrosion of sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in an active and gentle way.
The corrosion-resistant super austenitic 904L is in the middle of the super austenitic grades, 6% molybdenum content, and 316L austenitic grades. 904L is weaker in nitric acid than 304L and 310L due to the lack of molybdenum. This steel grade can achieve maximum stress and corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments after cold working.
